30/30 Poetry Challenge – WXW -Day 5

Prompt for April 5th – schizophrenic ice cream cone

“If you want to be a different fish, you’ve got to jump out of the school.”
― Don van Vliet, aka Captain Beefheart

My Choice

standing at the short pointed end of the block

the harbour behind

stretching on tip-toe

peering through the sliding hatch

catching a glimpse

of exotic coconut

darkly dangerous blackcurrant and cream

foreign-sounding pistachio

crunchy hokey pokey

and the once mis-pronounced,

but never ever allowed to be forgotten, raspberry nipple

a future of unimaginable choice of flavours

unlimited coins nestling in dry-cleaned, not washed garments

open ticket to everywhere

expenses paid

rooms full of friends

why is it

I find myself

standing at a kitchen sink,

watching the sunset over a cold English sea,

you behind me eating cheese-on-toast?

my choice

vanilla

30/30 Poetry – WXW- Day 4

Prompt for Day 4: sometimes you have to walk away

my future starts when I wake up every morning. Every day I find something creative to do with my life”.

        -Miles Davis

Sometimes You Have to Walk Away

evening sun warmly slants in small high window

rough brown carpet startles my unclad feet

soft-smelling cheeks and rubbed-off hair

under lemon-cotton cover

rising and falling

rising and falling

rising and falling

still Michelin-man parcel

encased in billowing padded snow-white

held prisoner by my arms

no window

a cell from which

I must grant my own parole

sometimes you have to walk away

30/30 Poetry – WXW- Day 3

Prompt for April 3 –

out of luck

“You can’t use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have.”

― Maya Angelou

CREATIVITY (for Dindga McCannon)

being frugal
she weighed up pros and cons
hardly ever buying paints and brushes, paper and canvas
storing them carefully
so they could last for ever
one day
she would be creative
be inspired
and allow herself to be an artist

a woman came to stay.
as long as she could remember
she said in her head
and right out loud
“I am an artist”.
some agreed
some encouraged
some laughed
still she drew, she painted, she created
she could NOT

seeing the laid-by lovelies
she did not understand
that things should be “put by for best”
she reached out
unscrewed the tubes
dipped into the jars
smeared the canvas

and from her fingers
flowed people and patterns
and joy
that could not be stopped

30/30 Poetry – WXW- Day 2

Prompt for April 2 –

on the couch

“Every child is an artist, the problem is staying an artist when you grow up.”

― Pablo Picasso

On the Couch

On the couch
lies a girl with chestnut hair
Her head rests
upon a green embroidered cushion.
No one else in this room

At the table
sit four young men
cards in their hands

At the sink
stands a woman
hands in water
her gaze firmly fixed
on blossom
through the window
In the garden watches a man
hands in his pocket
face turned to the sky
back-lit by the moon.

30/30 Poetry – WXW- Day 1

The Prompt for April 1 is:

from start to finish

“We have to continually be jumping off cliffs and developing our wings on the way down.”

― Kurt Vonnegut

From Start to Finish

From start to finish
two hundred and sixty eight miles
we’ve travelled down that road
so many times
that we are familiar
with all the sites of interest
and stunning views
and where there used to be a sign
but someone moved it

that journey
is a little like our lives
heading down that road again
not always in the same lane
not always at the same speed
more or less
to the same destination
from start to finish
two hundred and sixty eight miles

A Fresh Start

Given my tendency to flit from one interest to another, my old blog title was meaningless. With this new home and name perhaps I will feel less guilty about my lack of posts and relevance.
